Chelsea Mid Season Review

Initial expectations

With the signings of few talented young players alongside the aging Thiago Silva coming into a young squad who have been lacking a serious leader and character of his stature , for me my expectation was top 3 finish and challenge for the title. We are half way through the season and I’m worried that Chelsea might miss out on a Champion League position.

Best performers

The way we started off you could have picked 5 or 6 players as our best performers but that hasn’t been the case as only 3 players have been playing greatly and they are Reece James, Kurt Zouma and Ben Chilwell who have been excellent this season with some fine display in both ends of the pitches. Big shout to Thiago Silva who’s still performing at his age. 

Underperformers

The underperformers.. there really are quite a few of them especially Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and the last few weeks Hakim Ziyech. Timo Werner started off brilliantly scoring goals, assisting and winning penalties but over the last 13 games he looks like a player who’s lacking so much confidence in front of goal, it’s not like he isn’t getting any chances, he is and loads of clear-cut chances that could easily be finished off. Kai Havertz I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet, I personally think if got on that Leon Goretzka workout he could handle the physical side of the league and show his class. What has happened to Captain America? Probably the best player after the restart and who was on Hazard-esque unplayable run but ever since he got back from injury, he looks a shell of that player. Ziyech started off as good as anyone imaged with 6 G/A in 4 starts and suddenly looked like we had finally replaced Juan Mata after all these years but since his first London derby against Spurs he hasn’t performed to the standard that is expected of him.

Ones to watch in the second half of the season

The players to look out for in the second half of the season have to be Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour.  With the way the midfield has been playing its gotta be sooner rather than later that Gilmour gets a chance in the league.

Rating the manager

Lampard season looks a bit of a mess right now with no real tactics or performances to his game and going back to the midfield of Kovacic, Jorginho and Mount or kovavic and Mount duo which is really the last thing that this Chelsea team needed as this midfield offers no protection of the backline and no creating options for the attackers, just sideway passes and the odd ball over the top which usually leads to nowhere but back to the opposition. He still hasn’t found his best XI and we are half way through the season which is very worrying considering all the managers around us seem to know theirs. I really really hope Lampard turns this form around but I’m slowly losing hope with these lacklustre performance’s week in and week out. 5/10 season.

Where we’ll finish

I personally think we’ll get top 4 with the way the season is going.
