Here the choice was between Mendy and Keylor Navas. Navas wasn’t able to keep a clean sheet but did however have a good display particularly in the second leg, where he saved a Lionel Messi penalty that could have potentially sparked a comeback. We went for Mendy in the end who was very solid in both legs and managed two clean sheets, taking his tally now to 20 in all competitions.
At CB Pepe had to go in, he put in a Hall of Fame performance against Juventus, he played like he was still in his prime, it’s no wonder he’s still in the Portugal team. Beside him is Rudiger who seems to be a new fan favourite under Tuchel, mad what a competent manager can do for players isn’t it? Either side of the CB’s we went with the ever impressive Cancelo and a TAA who seems to be coming back into his best form, although Gareth Southgate doesn’t seem to agree.
Before getting into the midfield and attack don’t forget to check out our post on some of Europe’s fast rising stars!
Luka Modric just doesn’t seem to want to stop, he’s everywhere and at 35 he’s still playing at this at elite level, Xavi at 35 was in Saudi Arabia, Iniesta is 36 and has been in Japan since 2018, Gerrard was in Hollywood at 35. Lampard was scoring against Chelsea for Man City on his Premier League farewell tour, at 35. Even Pirlo was headed for New York at 35. Zidane was retired before he even reached this age, no disrespect intended. Only Paul Scholes was able to reinvent his game and play deep past age 35 at the highest level. What’s scary about Modric is his legs don’t seem to be going, he’s everywhere on the pitch, if he can lead Madrid to glory again, a serious dialogue will have to be opened.
Alongside him in midfield is Porto’s Sergio Oliveira, he ran the first leg against Juventus and in the second leg scored twice including the goal that sent the Juventini packing. Gundogan also features in midfield, this guy just won’t stop scoring and if he keeps it up, he could clean up in the end of season awards.
In attack we went for Chiesa on the left, he’s only player to feature who wont be in tomorrow’s draw, which we will be live tweeting for those of you who want be watching. He managed to get 3 goals across both legs with one beautiful finish, he was in a poor team yet he still managed to shine, he has a great career ahead of himself.
The other two options were inevitable. Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, the next two superstars in football, Haaland bagged 4 meanwhile Mbappe got 3. I’m praying the football God’s pair them against each other tomorrow. Salah and Mane were unlucky to miss out but these 3 were just that bit better.
