The Premier League GOAT #19

David Silva

It’s actually a coincidence that David Silva features in our countdown this week as there’s been a lot of discussion over where he ranks among the footballing greats, I’ve seen some wild takes calling him the ‘Greatest midfielder of the past 20 years’ and also others which completely dismiss his ability and impact on English football. For me he’s definitely a Premier League great, those that are obsessed with G/A won’t give him his respect but for me he’s a standout player in the last decade of the Premier League and well worthy of a spot at #19. He was part of the famed Valencia trio of David Villa, Juan Mata and himself. Three devastating Spaniards who have achieved nothing but glory in their careers.

Disclaimer

As usual these disclaimers will be disclosed weekly, so please take note of them before reading.

  1. The list mostly includes players from the 2000s & 2010s, with the exception of one or two. I did not think I could fairly compare players from the 90s that I’ve only watched on Youtube or read about.
  2. I wanted to include at least one player from every position, so there’s a good variety of players and not just forwards or midfielders.
  3. There is a difference between ‘best’ & ‘greatest’. Example: Wayne Rooney is in my opinion, the best player to ever play for Everton but he’s not their greatest ever player.

Please keep these disclaimers in mind! If you missed the previous 6 entrants please find them below.

“He is one of the most incredible, intelligent players in the small spaces. He is one of the best I’ve ever known. It’s not just the quality, he’s a huge competitor in the training matches. The Premier League is not easy, and he did it. He must be so proud.”
Pep Guardiola
Man City manager

This quote from his former manager Pep Guardiola perfectly encapuslates David Silva. At 5’7 with a small frame many would have expected David Silva to be bullied in England, he was never the quickest either, so how he managed to overcome the tough physical style of English football with little to no physical attributes is incredible. He was the heart of the Man City midfield for a decade and was able to transition into a deeper role towards the end of his spell but still managed to be one of the most influential players in the league. I actually hated this guy, was so jealous of City having him, his passing, dribbling and close control were second to none in the league.

Notable Achievements

Being a part of Man City for the past 10 years means one thing, domestic domination, his CV is stacked with League titles and cups however he wasn’t able to achieve European glory in his tenure.

  • 4x Premier league winner
  • 2x FA Cup winner
  • 5x League Cup winner
  • PFA TOTY x3
  • Premier League Team of the Decade (2010-2020)

While he didn’t get his hand on a Champions League, during his spell in England he became European champion with Spain where he was named in the team of the tournament, the top assist provider and had the most goal contributions. Pretty damn impressive considering who his teammates were.

2018 Title win
One of the most dominant spines in English football history
“The year I had there [at Man City], to train with him every day, to see his humility as a player and his quality and everything he brings, was something special. I am delighted that he has had the success and all the recognition because he is incredible.”
Frank Lampard
Man City Legend

Before we get into his best moments don’t forget to check out our latest post on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Best Moments, Goals and Assists

One moment springs to mind when I think of David Silva, unfortunately its a painful moment, as Silva pulled off one of the best assists you’ll ever see in Man City’s 1-6 humiliation of United.

Although this came for Spain it’s considered one of the best team goals ever, I had to include it, watch from start to finish.

After his departure Man City complied a video of his best moments, take a look below if you have the time, I personally didn’t remember him scoring some of these goals, some of them are outrageous, coupled with his dribbling and passing, this guy was an incredible player.

“He pulls the strings on the pitch. A brilliant footballer with great movement, he can score, assist, a player who decides a game. He’s got so much to his game, that I would consider him one of the best ever.”
Andres Iniesta
Midfield Legend

Summary

David Silva absolutely had to be in this list, there’s no possible way he could be excluded, perhaps I could have had him a little higher but I feel ranks 15-25 are mostly based on preference and personal opinion. I think 15 would be the absolute limit for him and that’s not a slight because the Premier League has so many legends to choose from. I don’t really know why fans don’t give him the respect he’s earned but he definetely gets it from me, its just a shame he had to play for City, at least he didn’t win a Champions League I guess, but I doubt that’ll bother him too much with his World Cup and Euros(x2) medals at home. Well worthy of a spot in the top 25, the magician himself, David Silva!

Thanks for reading!

We’ll be back next week for number 18, with a striker featured, stay tuned and check out our latest posts below, today we released a Rising ballers article as well as the Champions League team of the Round of 16!
