The Premier League GOAT #18

Petr Cech

Even during the International break we’re back again with the ever consistent Prem GOAT countdown. This week features the second goalkeeper to feature on this list. For many he’s the greatest keeper in Premier League history, he’s in everyone’s top 3 at least, the Czech legend, Petr Cech. A multi time Premier League winner, a record breaker and an unbelievable goalkeeper, he’s well deserving of a spot at #18 in this list.

Disclaimer

As usual these disclaimers will be disclosed weekly, so please take note of them before reading.

  1. The list mostly includes players from the 2000s & 2010s, with the exception of one or two. I did not think I could fairly compare players from the 90s that I’ve only watched on Youtube or read about.
  2. I wanted to include at least one player from every position, so there’s a good variety of players and not just forwards or midfielders.
  3. There is a difference between ‘best’ & ‘greatest’. Example: Wayne Rooney is in my opinion, the best player to ever play for Everton but he’s not their greatest ever player.

Please keep these disclaimers in mind! If you missed the previous 7 entrants please find them below.

"I would need millions of words to describe you, your good heart, your professionalisms and winning mentality but one picture summarises it all," Drogba wrote on Instagram. "Thank you my hero Petr Cech for having golden hands and heart. Man saved three penalties and run into me like I’m a legend."
Didier Drogba
Chelsea legend

Something that often isn’t spoken about is Petr Cech’s display that night, he saved 3 penalties, 1 in normal time and 2 in the shootout, an outrageous performance. That wasn’t even prime Cech either, back in his prime you just weren’t scoring against him. In his debut season he conceded 13 goals in 35 games, absolutely ridiculous. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nobody’s replicated this since and nobody ever will. That record will remain forever. Checkout a countdown we did previously where we rank the top 10 debut seasons in Premier League history. Petr Cech features high on the list! For him to come to England relatively unknown and produce the season he did is incredible, he’s gotta be up there with greatest signings ever.

Notable Achievements

He won everything there is to win in the game during his spell in England, one of the most impressive CVs you’ll see from a keeper and he was no passenger in any of these triumphs, he was a key player in one of the strongest spines English football has ever seen.

  • 4 time Premier League winner
  • 4 time FA Cup winner
  • 3 time League Cup winner
  • Champions League winner
  • Europa League winner
  • 4 time Golden Glove winner (04/05, 09/10, 13/14, 15/16 – Joint most with Joe Hart)
  • Most Premier League clean sheets (202)

An incredible list of achievements, I could’ve been here all day listing them. Multi time winner in everything domestic and he had European success. One wonders if he was from a stronger nation would he have had International success also.

FA Cup win
Europa League winner
“He was a very important person for the atmosphere in the dressing room. He had a great personality and was a big leader with a natural authority.”
Michael Ballack
Former Teammate

Best Moments & Saves

Not only was he an amazing goalkeeper but he was a great leader, the perfect combination to be an all time great keeper. I’ve went back to look at his best saves and there’s quite a few of them.

Heroics off the bench

His first action of the game was a double save which included a penalty stop! Incredible moment from Cech.

Munich masterclass

As mentioned earlier, this was the first of 3 penalty saves he made that night, an iconic performance from him that should go down in history.

Best ever saves

The Chelsea youtube page made this short comp featuring the best saves he made throughout his time there, theres some great ones included here!

Conclusion

I’ve always wondered would Cech have been able to continue his early Chelsea career form had he not suffered his head injury, not to say he became a poor keeper but I do think he regressed. Perhaps he’s just a victim of his own success because how can you possibly sustain conceding 13 goals in 35 games. Regardless of what I think his ability levels dropped too, his career arguably got better post head injury. Once he started winning titles, he never stopped, another player that Chelsea fans should be grateful Jose Mourinho brought to your club. He said himself he’s honoured he gave him a Chelsea debut.

"I am honoured to have been the manager that, at such an early age, gave Petr a top Premier League number one shirt. After that day, it is all about him. All about his numbers, his performances, his clean sheets, his titles and his professionalism."
Jose Mourinho
Judas #1

He’s well worthy of the title, ‘best goalkeeper in Premier League history’. With everything I’ve listed above it’s hard to argue against this claim. He easily deserves his spot at #18 on this list!

  4. Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it
to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.”
She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her
ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
