The Premier League GOAT #17

Anderson

For me one of the most underrated players in Premier League history. A four time Premier League winner, a Champions League winner, and a Copa America winner(one more than Messi). People like to call him a flop for some reason, maybe cause he wasn’t a goal threat. Prior to his awful injuries he was an integral part of the United midfield. He’d be top 10 in the league today if you ask me. He’s also got one of these.

Ballon D’or winner

April Fools!

It might be Agenda FC but even we couldn’t justify Anderson being the 17th Greatest Premier League Player of all time. Although all those accolades listed were true (except the Ballon d’or) and he absolutely wasn’t an a flop, a very very good midfielder who had a career others could only dream of. If you’ve managed to make it this far you’ll find the real #17 below, enjoy!

Didier Drogba

A footballing legend. A man who stopped a war. The king of Chelsea. Didier Drogba. When you think of a ‘big game player’, Didier Drogba is one of the first names that come to mind. He showed up when it mattered most. He won countless titles and did so in iconic fashion. While maybe his most Iconic moments were in Europe, he still had some major moments domestically. Drogba was one of the players in this countdown I was on the fence about, at one point he wasn’t even going to make the list, but when I look at my criteria he’s well worthy of a spot at #17.

Disclaimer

As usual these disclaimers will be disclosed weekly, so please take note of them before reading.

  1. The list mostly includes players from the 2000s & 2010s, with the exception of one or two. I did not think I could fairly compare players from the 90s that I’ve only watched on Youtube or read about.
  2. I wanted to include at least one player from every position, so there’s a good variety of players and not just forwards or midfielders.
  3. There is a difference between ‘best’ & ‘greatest’. Example: Wayne Rooney is in my opinion, the best player to ever play for Everton but he’s not their greatest ever player.

Please keep these disclaimers in mind! If you missed the previous 8 entrants please find them below.

“He’s won the African Footballer of the Year award like me. In his position, he’s one of the few players who holds the ball up and scores lots of goals. He has scored nearly one in two for his whole career. He is two types of striker in one.”
Samuel Eto'o
Footballing legend

For someone who is apparently known for not being the most clinical, scoring nearly 1 in 2 across your whole career is not bad at all. Combine that with 9 cup final goals, that’s some career to have.

Achievements

He retired with a CV he could have only dreamt of having before making his move to Chelsea. This CV rivals almost anyone’s in Premier League history.

  • 4 time Premier League winner.
  • 4 time FA Cup winner.
  • 3 time League Cup winner.
  • 4th place in the Ballon d’or rankings in 2007.
  • 2 time Golden Boot winner (06/07, 09,10).
  • 2 time PFA TOTY nominee.

As well as all of these great domestic achievements, whilst playing for Chelsea Drogba achieved his crowning moment in the Champions League final where he scored the equaliser for Chelsea, was Man of the Match and scored the winning penalty. An incredible performance.

Immortality
FA Cup victory
“People talk about Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney, the great strikers, but he is right up there. People that score in finals and in the big games, he is right up there”
Frank Lampard
Chelsea GOAT

Best Moments & Goals

From early childhood I remember some of the crazy goals this guy scored, my personal favourite has to be his volley against Liverpool, such a beautiful strike.

An unstoppable strike, what I love about this is, you rarely see any goals like it, unique goals are always my favourite.

Wembley was his yard

This was another ridiculous volley, in a big game again. What a player. This goal doesn’t even make sense, what possessed him to think he was even going to score here.

Crowning moment

What a crazy moment. Absolute bullet header. Tyler and Neville were quality here too, what a moment.

“Drogba is a fighter. He is the kind of player I would say ‘with you I could go to every war”
John Doe
Icon

The irony here is that he literally ended a war..

Conclusion

This choice might divide opinion but for me he is a footballing great, a few years in the Prem where he wasn’t very prolific, can’t take away from what he accomplished for me. Great goals, great moments and a leader. As a kid I hated him, he terrorised my club but he’s one of the players I grew to appreciate more as I got older. I still shout “DROGBAAA” when I go for a bullet header to this day. A Premier League legend well worthy of a spot at #17, Didier Drogba!
