The Premier League GOAT #12

Ashley Cole

I think he’s the only undisputed no.1 in his position in Premier League history, yes the likes of Evra & Denis Irwin are right up there but the common consensus is that Ashley Cole is the greatest LB the Premier League has ever seen. Even before his move to Chelsea where he experienced European glory, his legacy was already set in stone as he was part of the famous 04 Invincible team. He was a complete LB, up and down the left flank, defending and attacking. While defending was his strong point he didn’t lack offensively at all and it’s why he was a mainstay in some of the best Premier League teams of all time, he’s very worthy of the #12 spot.

Disclaimer

As usual these disclaimers will be disclosed weekly, so please take note of them before reading.

  1. The list mostly includes players from the 2000s & 2010s, with the exception of one or two. I did not think I could fairly compare players from the 90s that I’ve only watched on Youtube or read about.
  2. I wanted to include at least one player from every position, so there’s a good variety of players and not just forwards or midfielders.
  3. There is a difference between ‘best’ & ‘greatest’. Example: Wayne Rooney is in my opinion, the best player to ever play for Everton but he’s not their greatest ever player.

Please keep these disclaimers in mind! If you missed the previous 13 entrants please find them below.

“An absolutely outstanding player and bloke. He always had time for everyone at the training ground. Two games stick out for me: one was against Ronaldo for England – Ash didn’t give him a kick – and against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League when we got to the final. In the first leg particularly, no one could get past Ash and he should be very proud of what he achieved as a left-back.”

Achievements

In terms of left backs, his CV is only bettered by Patrice Evra and Denis Irwin. From 2001 to 2013 he won at least one trophy every year except 2006 & 2011, a crazy run of success. His CV is as follows:

  • 3x Premier League winner
  • 7x FA Cup winner
  • League Cup winner
  • 4 PFA TOTY Nominations, including 3 in row

As well as all of these domestic awards he also achieved European glory two seasons running as Chelsea won the Champions League and Europa League back to back. He also featured in the UEFA TOTY twice. Chelsea players also voted him their POTY in 08/09 and 10/11 which is a great achievement for a full back.

2012 CL win
League & Cup double 02

Best Moments

Cole has a lot of memorable moments in the Premier League, most surprisingly is that he won Chelsea’s goal of the season in 2009/10, a year in which they became the first team to score 100 goals in a Premier League season.

Also who could forget the time he famously pocketed Ronaldo back in 06.

Another great goal here, this time after some fine play from Henry.

“Controversies in his personal life and over his transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea mean that Cole will never be the most popular man But he is the best English full-back I have ever seen and was the best left-back in the world for several years – outstanding in defence and when going forward.”
Jimmy Greaves
England legend

One of England’s best ever

I agree with the above quote completely, I think off field antics are why he doesn’t always get his flowers, for me after Rooney, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and Rio, he’s the best english player of the last 20 years. I would love to see how he’d be rated in today’s game, would they criticise him cause he doesn’t get the G/A of others or would his fine defensive displays be too hard to overlook. Regardless of how he’d be viewed in today’s game there’s no denying he’s a top 3 LB in all of football of the past 20 years and well deserving a spot at #12 on this list.

Thanks for reading!

We’ll be back next week with another top 10 countdown and a new edition of streets won’t forget focusing on Demba Ba & Papisse Cisse. In the meantime don’t forget to check out our recent posts below.
