Initial expectations

After a rollercoaster of a season for United in 19/20, trying to gauge expectations for the current season was hard, especially after the below average window I believe the club had leading up to it. The expectation for me was that we’d be amongst the teams pushing to play Champions League football the next season, not really a change from previous seasons and heavily dependent on direct rivals faltering more than us.

As we’ve seen so far, this has been the case with only Liverpool, Man City and Tottenham amongst the chasing pack, with Chelsea and Arsenal falling below expectations.

Best performers

United being towards the top of the pack at the halfway stage is largely down to Bruno, who for me has been by far the biggest influence in Utd’s surge to the top, along with Rashford and special mentions to Cavani, Maguire, Shaw and Pogba amongst others.

Underperformers

Amongst the underperformers have been Martial, Fred and Greenwood, although the latter is excused for me because of how much responsibility and pressure was put on his shoulders at such a young age, but I’m sure that wasn’t surprising for him after he lit up the league in his breakout season hitting double figures in all competitions at 18 years of age.  Martial has continued to frustrate fans with his inconsistent and lack lustre displays in the forward line, which is especially annoying for management I assume given the amount of trust Ole put in him when he arrived selling Lukaku without a replacement and handing him back his number 9 jersey.  Fred given his capabilities hasn’t been the worst but I just feel he’s dispensable, doesn’t bring much to the table shape wise which is vital in the middle of the park and his erratic passing and brainless pressing makes me want to pull my hair out.

How have signings performed

The signings in the summer, as poor of a window as it was for me, DID mean we finally had competition for places in more than just a handful of important areas of the pitch, more importantly we had a killer up front in Cavani, however initially his age was a worry and Telles’ defensive capabilities also, both have proven the doubters wrong luckily. Cavani has proven to be our standout signing with crucial goals and displays in the league.
Van De Beek has been a name in the media for quite a while, mostly because of his lack of game time but I do believe he was an early Pogba replacement who I wouldn’t rule out being one of the first in the team sheet next season, hopefully alongside Pogba.

Ones to watch in the second half of the season

VDB would definitely be one to watch for the second half of the season for Utd as games start coming thick and fast with Europa League games and the need to rest Bruno and maybe Pogba.  I also feel Greenwood has a lot more to show us even though his first half of the season has been rocky internally and externally.

Rating the manager

Ole has done a decent job in ensuring United are amongst the teams chasing top spot, meaning we will at the very least, if these performances continue, be in the running for Top 4, which for me is the most important thing if we want to continue growing as a squad and getting back to consistent title charges.  Ole has also managed to restore Pogba’s confidence which has benefited him and the club massively, so credit where it is due however, Utd’s embarrassing exit in the Champions League, along with bowing out of another semi-final when Utd froze up against City in the Carabao Cup as well as considering how open the league is, Ole’s rating out of 10 for me is 5.

Where I think we’ll finish

I think as the season goes on and delves into the 25-30 game stage, we’ll start to see if this was a stretch of very good form for United or a genuine title push and I can’t help but be swayed towards the former.  The last 9 years post-Ferguson has given us very little to be optimistic about across all competitions, so using past experiences to gauge where this season will take us is the only way to view it at this current time for me. At the end of it all I see us finishing either 3rd or 4th.
