The Midfield Duo
Chelsea’s midfield has been a pain point for the team since Antonio Conte’s second season, with the sale of Matic he brought in Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko. When I saw the pair of these live, I genuinely wanted a refund. Since then we’ve moved on, with Conte’s exit Sarri was brought in. He also brought his son with him, Jorge Luiz Frello Filho better known as Jorginho or J5, along with J5 the Croatian Mateo Kovacic was brought on loan. Then began the Jovacic Era with Kante in and out due to a series of injuries.
When Sarri came in and started implementing sarriball someone like J5 seemed like a perfect fit as he excels in short quick lateral passes when his team has a lot of possession. This style of play should give your team a lot of control. Chelsea did have control when facing weaker opposition that allowed us to have the ball and try to break them down. But that’s it, if you ask J5 to control the game against anyone slightly imposing., it’s like watching a 12-year-old boy trying to take the ball off a grown man. J5’s physical attributes and defensive capabilities in this league are what I thought were letting him down, he has a fragile build with no defensive awareness playing as our deepest midfielder. Do you see the issue?
Under Sarri, Kovacic was often rotated as a LCM with Ross Barkley (Shout out to you) at first glance he’s very easy on the eye, a press resistant competent dribbler, but I wasn’t sure what he gave us in the middle of the park. Ball retention? I’m still not quite sure what we get from him in there now.
When I saw Sarri’s Chelsea live I thought I finally understood what Kovacic was giving us in there, adding energy and recycling the ball, which works under that possession based slow build up style. YAWN. Jovacic didn’t really get a fair run until fat Frank was at the helm and Eden Hazard left for Madrid (Pain). This is where how incapable they were became very clear, with no creativity from Hazard we looked elsewhere. Maybe our Ball playing midfielder would help us progress the ball forward, make key passes and create from deep or our press resistant midfielder could progress the ball and release it nicely. Nope we entered an era of Lateral passing, dribbling and vibes. The pair are constantly bullied in the middle, gave the defence 0 protection and provided no creative out outlet.
There was a period under Fat Frank where they showed some promise as we went on a good spell, one of our reporters *cough* JaeminWildz *cough* even branded them Xavi and Iniesta LITE. He was quickly disappointed and now is one of #JovacicOut biggest advocates.
Chelsea are in desperate need of someone who can protect the defence effectively and help progress the ball past the initial press. Bring me Ndidi and Tielemans.
